From apparatus to mat - relating the two sides of the system

We are taught that the mat work is the basis for Joseph Pilates system of exercise, that the apparatus and the exercises on them were developed to inform your body more fully so that the mat exercises could be achieved. However, there is often confusion in how they relate, especially since most apparatus exercises are not direct translations of their mat counterparts. In this workshop, we’ll look at a sampling of mat exercises, break them down, and find how we can use the rest of the system to inform those exercises. We’ll also look at common pitfalls that happen when mat exercises are attempted on the apparatus directly.

SmörgâsBoard

We invite you to SmörgåsBoard, a Cooperative Performance event featuring a sampling of work from our talented board of directors. Join us from 11-2, or any part of that time, and watch our board members perform, chat with Cooperative Performance members and fellow audience goers, grab a bite, and sip some drinks.
All proceeds raised at this event go to support the production of new, relevant performance in Milwaukee.

About the show..
"Real Time", created by CP Board Chair Andrea Burkholder and Daniel Burkholder, brings movement-based performance to new levels through conversation, improvisation, and shared experience in the moment.

"The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs" by Mike Daisey had its Milwaukee premiere in 2013 in a production directed by CP Board Secretary Alan Piotrowicz. Alan now leads a reading (featuring multiple CP board members) of this piece that illuminates how the former CEO of Apple and his obsessions have shaped our lives and the world... for better and worse.

Anyone can be an audience, and everyone should be able to experience the arts. You value live arts, and we value you. This event is supported by freewill donation. You can further support Cooperative Performance by purchasing a ticket to our 50/50 raffle during the event!

The Arts @ Large Café will be open for lunch during this event and wine and beer will be available for purchase.

Can't make it, but want to support the work we do for local creators and performers? You can donate right here: https://www.cooperativeperformance.org/donate

Pilates Advanced Training for Instructors

Where is your weight? is the question we'll be exploring in our third advanced training at Absolute Pilates. Often, exercises are approached as you have to be "strong enough" to do them, but Andrea's response is "no, you have to be organized."

This workshop will help teachers focus on how a student supports and distributes their weight for stability in exercises. Once the point(s) of stability are understood, then we can focus on the movements and nuances of these exercises. After a brief mat warm up, we will look at exercises on the most commonly used apparatus, reformer, cadillac, and wunda chair.

Please contact Kristin Olson at Absolute Pilates to register

This Prison Where I Live

Andrea is thrilled to perform in Theater Red's production of This Prison Where I Live

written and directed by Angela Iannone

This Prison Where I Live recalls Edwin Booth, the first superstar celebrity in the world of theater, as he rehearses his production of Shakespeare's Richard the Second. As he readies himself to play, the ghosts of his past, including that of his notorious brother, interrupt his rehearsals with their own requests and mock the crown of America's "Prince of Players."

The Accumulation of Acts

Diving into a new realm, Andrea and Daniel Burkholder present their first gallery installation this summer at Alfons Gallery, on historic south Layton Blvd.

Gallery Hours: 12-3pm Sundays, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

The exhibit includes "one square foot", a multi-media work featuring interviews of Milwaukeeans reflecting on places that hold significance for them. This work features video projected on a room-wide screen in an immersive, living room-style setting.

Additionally, in "1x1", performers inhabit two 6'x6' modular platforms, on which they build, alter, and demolish their world, thereby exploring their ever changing relationship to the space and thereby each other. Behind the performers a video of driving the perimeter of Milwaukee is projected, and below the performers is a handmade river symbolic of the three rivers running through and separating Milwaukee's neighborhoods.

Over the course of this exhibit 8 site-specific dance performances will take place in locations throughout Milwaukee, bringing the project back to the neighborhoods where research for the project was gathered.

As all elements of this project are unfunded, yet free and open to the public, we gratefully accept any amount of monetary donation (tax deductible) to support the work.

Andrea and Daniel continue bringing movement-based performance in this month's Real Time as they welcome Christopher Elst and his amazing talents at stage combat and fight directing.

Christopher and Andrea are teaching their expertise to each other and choreographing all month leading up to Real Time to offer two pieces- an trapeze partnering duet, and stage combat duet.   Daniel, who will not be privy to either of these duets, will offer an improvised performance based on what he sees the night of the show. And, of course, you can expect a duet from Andrea and Daniel, this one exploring the inherent tension in contact improvisation and in aerial partnering.

Real Time

Andrea and Daniel Burkholder, bring their First Friday dance event, Real Time  back to Danceworks (1661 N Water St, Milwaukee) on October 7 at 8:30 pm.

This month’s installation incorporates video and real time performance simultaneously occurring as well as the evolution of a duet performed numerous times, demonstrating the intricacies of relationship and community.

October’s Real Time performance will draw inspiration from the summer events at Alfons Gallery and at a block party celebrating the groundbreaking of Za’Layia’s Legacy Garden. Andrea and Daniel will use video projection from their event with Eddee Daniel’s Memorial and Promise: Life on the Kinnickinnic and reimagine their relationship to the photographs while in a theater setting. They will also perform their hand-holding duet “Grasp” from Za’Layia’s garden at various time throughout the evening, each iteration reflecting on a changing relationship. To round out the evening, Andrea will also perform her aerial solo, “The Distance Between”.

As always, tickets are pay-what-you-will, with you putting the value on the art you are coming to see, and drinks are offered gratis afterwards, as we look forward to having you stay and talking with you.
